A: NFPA 211 (National Fire Protection Association Standard 211) recommends that all chimneys, fireplaces and vents be inspected annually. The cleaning on a wood appliance chimney depends on how dry your firewood is, how often you use the appliance, and how hot you burn. The cleaning on an oil furnace flue depends on how efficient your furnace is. The rule of thumb, however, is to have your oil flue cleaned every 2-5 years. The main thing to remember is to have your chimney inspected annually and cleaned if needed.
Q: Do you service my area?
A: Top Hat Chimney Sweep is located in Vershire, VT. We serve the Upper Valley & Lake Sunapee area. We travel as far north as Groton, VT & Littleton, NH and as far south as Warner, NH & Springfield, VT.
Q: Do I need to do anything before my appointment?
A: During the heating season your woodstove needs to be cool enough so that the technician can handle the stovepipe with his bare hands. You know your stove better than we do. Usually if you don't use the stove the day or night before it should be cool enough. Creosote is usually easier to remove in a cool dry chimney rather than a warm sticky chimney.
We also ask that you move any furniture or decorative accessories from around the appliance and the clean-out doors for full and easy access.
Q: Will you leave my house a mess?
A: NO. The area in your home should be left as clean or cleaner than we found it. We use vacuums, drop cloths, and will even remove our shoes if asked in order to keep your house clean during your scheduled inspection and/or cleaning.
Q: Do you work weekends?
A: Unfortunately, we only work Monday through Friday. Our technicians work hard during the week and have the weekends off to be home with their families.
Q: How do I schedule an appointment?
A: You can schedule an appointment by calling us at the office at 800-821-1162 if you are in VT or NH, or 802-333-4789, using our Request an Appointment form, or emailing us at top.hat.chimney@valley.net. Visit the Request an Appointment page to read about how our scheduling works.
We hope we have answered any questions you may have. If we haven't, please don't hesitate to contact us.
